The Mountain House
This is a house in a wild place, on a remote mountainous site in Co. Kerry. The plan of the building is composed of 2 simple blocks arranged at an angle to each other, like the clustered arrangement of traditional local farmhouses. This allows us to make rich and complex spaces from simple building forms.
The site strategy uses the existing levels and contours on site to embed the building in its landscape with the natural features of the topography allowing the building to step down towards the open hillside. The 2 blocks wrap around a central courtyard, in a contemporary version of the traditional farm yard.
Long-range views to the mountains are framed by a series of distinct gardens that the house sits within, creating a connected landscape consisting of:
